This sturdy slow cooker from leading brand Crock-Pot is a handsome looking machine. The striking black colour and solid build will look good on any work surface.

The generous 4.7-litre capacity makes this great for family cooking, it’ll serve six good-sized portions.

As the bowl is ceramic, searing and other preparation has to be done separately. Both recipes tested (our slow cooker 春秋彩票:beef stew and 春秋彩票:chicken curry) were excellent, with delicious, tender results, and no further reduction of the sauces needed.

A simple digital adjustable timer allows you to set cooking duration from 30 minutes to 20 hours. The cooker has high, low and warm settings.

We particularly liked that the cooker automatically switches to keep warm once the food is cooked, so if you’re late home, your food will still be hot and ready to eat. We tested this function and were delighted with the results. The food was as good after 1½ hours as it was at the end of the cooking time, the chicken curry had retained a great colour and a clear, fresh flavour.

CrockPot Lift and Serve slow cooker with aubergine parmigiana inside

One shining attribute of the Crock-Pot is in the name, Lift and Serve. The pot and lid lift out of the casing and look good enough to pop straight onto the table.

We loved the hinged lid, not only does it flick up easily, any condensation on the inside trickles down and into the pot, not on to the work surface. However, as the lid lifts backwards, there is a gush of steam, which can burn if an arm gets in the way (which happened the first time we used it).

The lid is also removable, which though useful for washing up, is fiddly when it comes to aligning the hinge to put it back on.
