Back in the eighties and nineties, the name ‘Breville’ was synonymous with the sandwich toaster. Every family seemed to have one, and every student seemed to be given one as a leaving home present when they started university. It’s still probably the best-known brand of sandwich maker out there today.

The machine is slightly confusingly titled as it actually makes two sandwiches at once, using four slices of bread. This means it is perfect for a small family. It’s a really solid and substantial feeling toaster, and one that you’d expect to last a long time. The stainless steel finish looks good too.

This comes with very detailed instructions. There are diagrams showing how to place the bread and where to place the filling in the sandwich, and it even recommends the maximum amount of cheese to use (60g, if you’re interested). The instructions have a recipe section with toasties but also other food using the same plates, like cake bites and omelettes.

Pre-heating was four minutes. One thing we didn’t like was the light, which starts at green when you switch the machine on and changes to amber once it has pre-heated to the right temperature. Although it’s clear and easy to see, green is usually associated with ‘go’ so this seems counter-intuitive to us.

On the positive side, there’s a high hinge so you can make a reasonably, though not excessively, deep sandwich. Our medium sized supermarket bread fitted well into the plates and the chunky handle closed with a satisfying click.

We followed instructions including buttering the outside of the bread in time-honoured fashion. We gave it the recommended four minutes and the toastie was perfect. It even looked appetising after two minutes when we sneaked a peek. The sandwich was well browned with a good seal. Cleaning is a doddle, as the plates are removable and can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher.

Breville has been around for a long time and you do get the sense that they know exactly how to make the perfect toasted sandwich. The machine comes with a flyer advertising waffle plates that fit in the sandwich toaster, which you can buy with a code for a 10% discount.
